MERION STATION, Pa. –
Ryan Picollo's RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth plated
Ryan Weingartner with the winning run as the Saint Joseph's baseball team topped Maine, 3-2, at Smithson Field on Friday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (8-9) took the lead in the bottom of the third after
Conlan Wall walked, stole second, and came around to score on a double to right by
Ryan Cesarini.
• The score remained at 1-0 until the top of the eighth when a two-out error led to a pair of singles and the tying run coming in to score.
• The Hawks answered back in the bottom of the frame as pinch-runner
Adam Fine scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-1.
• Maine (7-11) equalized again in the ninth on a solo home run by Myles Sargent.
• Weingartner singled with one out in the bottom of the ninth before stealing second; Picollo then drove a 2-2 pitch into left center to score Weingartner and bring the Hawks pouring out of the third base dugout.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
•
Will McCausland was outstanding on the mound on Friday, scattering six hits and a walk while striking out six in seven shutout innings, but did not factor into the decision. Nor did Maine's Colin Fitzgerald, who ceded a run on seven hits in six solid innings of his own.
•
Cole Stetzar got the win, finishing the game with an inning and a third of relief after
Patrick Shearer retired both batters he faced in the top of the eighth. Justin Baeyens took the loss after allowing a run on two hits in an inning and a third.
• Cesarini finished the day 3-for-5 at the plate, while Picollo enjoyed a two-hit game himself. Wall had a hit and two walks to reach base three times. Sargent finished 3-for-4 to lead the Black Bears.
