Baseball Falls to Maine, 17-12

MERION STATION, Pa. – The Saint Joseph's baseball team fell to Maine, 17-12, at a cold, damp, and overcast Smithson Field on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (8-10) got on the board right away, scoring three times in the first on consecutive singles by Nate Thomas and Ryan Weingartner and a sacrifice fly by Justin Igoe.

• The Hawks extended the lead in the second, scoring four times on a pair of two-out errors to make it a 7-0 game.

• Maine (8-11) got two back in the third and scored three in the fourth to cut the margin to two, but an RBI single by Ryan Picollo made it an 8-5 game through four.

• In the fifth, Brett Callahan added an RBI single before Ryan Cesarini singled him home two batters later to make it 10-5 in favor of the home team.

• The Black Bears rallied for five in the sixth, capped off with a grand slam by Jeremiah Jenkins, to tied things up.

• The visitors added three more on a home run in the top of the seventh by Quinn McDaniel, but Cesarini beat out an infield single to bring home a run and cut the deficit to 13-11.

• Two more in the eighth stretched the Maine lead to 15-11 before a Brandon Drapeau RBI single made it a three-run game headed to the ninth.

• Maine extended its advantage to five on a two-run home run by McDaniel in the ninth; the Hawks would go on to load the bases with two outs, but could not close the gap.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Ryan Scott was credited with the win for the Black Bears, allowing a run on a hit in an inning and two-thirds of relief.  Frank Ciccone took the loss after allowing five runs on two hits.

• Cesarini led the way at the plate for the Hawks, going 2-for-2 with four walks and three runs scored and two driven in.  Weingartner also had two hits and walked twice to reach base four times.  McDaniel went 5-for-5 with two home runs for Maine, while Jenkins hit two home runs as well.

• Caleb Leys uncorked six wild pitches for Maine, with Tyler Neilsen adding one; the total is the most by a Hawk opponent in a game since St. Bonaventure threw seven wild pitches on April 10, 1993.
