Comeback Falls Just Short as Baseball Drops Series Finale to Maine, 15-13

MERION STATION, Pa. – A valiant "The Hawk Will Never Die"-type comeback effort fell just short as the Saint Joseph's baseball team fell to Maine, 15-13, in the series finale between the teams at Smithson Field on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (8-11) scored first for the third consecutive game, plating a run on an RBI groundout by Nate Thomas in the bottom of the first.

• Maine (9-11) scored three in the third on home runs by Myles Sargent and Dylan McNary, but a two-run single by Thomas in the bottom of the inning tied the game at 3-3.

• A Ryan Turenne single in the fourth put the Black Bears back on top, 4-3.

• Maine would go on to score 11 times on nine hits in the top of the seventh inning, but the Hawks went right to work on getting back into the game.  Luca Trigiani led off the inning with a double before scoring on a throwing error.  Brett Callahan would single and score to cut the deficit to 15-5 with two down.

• Thomas then doubled and Ryan Weingartner singled; Justin Igoe followed with a single of his own to score Thomas.  Ryan Picollo then cleared the bases with a two-run triple to deep center before a Luke Zimmerman double scored him and cut the Maine lead to 15-9 heading to the eighth.

• A single by Callahan and walks to Conlan Wall and Ryan Cesarini to start the bottom of the eighth loaded the bases.  Two batters later, Igoe belted a grand slam to right center to bring the Hawks to within a pair.

• In the ninth, Trigiani would get aboard via an infield single, bringing the tying run to the plate with one out, but a pair of fly balls ended the rally just short.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Despite the later fireworks, it was the starting pitchers who received the decisions, as Maine's Noah Lewis allowed three runs on seven hits in six innings to get the win, while Domenic Picone was charged with four runs on seven hits in five innings in defeat.

• Callahan finished the day 3-for-5 with four runs scored, while six other Hawks collected two hits apiece.  Igoe drove in five runs on the day, while Thomas added three RBI.

• In the wild seventh inning, the teams combined to send 25 batters to the plate and score 17 runs on 16 hits.

• The Hawks recorded 17 hits on the day, their eighth consecutive game with a double-digit hit total.
