Baseball Opens Series with 9-4 Win at George Mason

FAIRFAX, Va. – The Saint Joseph's baseball team kicked off its final series of the regular season with a 9-4 win over George Mason at Spuhler Field on Thursday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (26-21-1 overall, 16-6 Atlantic 10) took the lead in the top of the first after Conlan Wall drew a walk and matriculated his way around the bases before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Nate Thomas.

• George Mason (28-23 overall, 12-9 Atlantic 10) equalized in the bottom of the frame on a single by Jordan Smith.

• Max Hitman led off the third with an infield single before Brett Callahan hit a two-run home run to give the Hawks a 3-1 lead.  Justin Igoe would eventually single home Ryan Cesarini to push the lead to three.

• Brandon Drapeau hit a leadoff home run in the fourth and the Hawks tacked on another run on a Hitman sac fly in the fifth to extend the lead to 6-1.  The Patriots then got two back on an infield single and a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the fifth.

• Igoe singled home Wall with another run in the sixth, but a wild pitch allowed GMU to get the run back and make it a 7-4 game after six.

• The Hawks added some key insurance runs in the eighth as a Callahan single was followed by a triple from Wall; he would then come in to score on another sac fly by Thomas to make it a 9-4 game.

• The Patriots had some traffic on the bases in the ninth, but could not cut into the Hawk lead.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Mike Falco allowed just a single unearned run on two hits in four and two-thirds innings in relief of Will McCausland to earn the win.  McCausland allowed three runs in four and a third innings.

• Owen Stewart took the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits in an inning a two-thirds of relief work.  Starter Ben Shields allowed a run on one hit in two innings.

• Igoe was 4-for-5 on the day with a pair of runs batted in, while Cesarini and Ryan Weingartner had three hits apiece.  Wall scored a game-high three runs, with Callahan scoring twice.
