Men’s Lacrosse Upset by High Point in Atlantic 10 Semifinals

5/4/2023 8:02:00 PM

Box Score RICHMOND, Va. – A second half surge from High Point helped upset the top-seeded Saint Joseph's men's lacrosse team 16-14 in the Atlantic 10 Semifinals on Thursday evening on Robins Stadium.

The loss moves the Hawks to 10-5 on the season, concluding the inaugural A-10 campaign with possession of the Atlantic 10 Regular Season Title after falling in the opening round of the tournament. High Point moves to the championship game, facing the winner of Richmond and UMass.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • High Point opened the scoring in the first two minutes of the game, giving the Panthers a quick lead.
  • The advantage lasted less than a minute, Matt Bohmer finding the first goal of the afternoon for St. Joe's to level the scoring.
  • SJU used the Bohmer goal to start a 5-0 run, Mac McLaughlin giving the Hawks the first lead for the top seed.
  • Colin Reich tallied his 13th of the season just six minutes in before First Team All-Atlantic 10 selection Levi Anderson found open space before firing past the goalkeeper.
  • Capping off the run, Joe Burnham used a rare run into the attacking half of the field after a feed from Cole Peters, firing low and into the back of the net.
  • Looking like the Hawks had all momentum in the world, the Panthers stormed back with four goals over the final five minutes of play in the opening quarter to level the scoring.
  • Bohmer took matters into his own hand to begin the second frame, tallying his second of the game to cut the High Point run.
  • Griffin Mallory found the net for his fourth goal of the season to sandwich Bohmer's hat trick that would extend the Hawk lead to 8-5.
  • For the 27th consecutive game, Carter Page found the back of the net as the junior tallied his team-leading 45th goal of the season.
  • With under three minutes to play, Mallory scooped up a loose ball off a rebounded Hawk shot and slotted home, helping the Hawks take a 10-5 lead into the halftime break.
  • Just three minutes into the second half, the Panthers cut the deficit to just one goal as a quick four-goal burst saw High Point trail 10-9.
  • With the Hawks looking for someone to stop the Panther run, they'd have to look no further than Page as the Canadian marksman received a pass from Levi Verch with plenty of space, powering a shot into the back of the net.
  • After the 10-man ride for the Hawks forced High Point into a turnover at midfield, Anderson was left wide open 10 yards out from the goal. Almost confused at the amount of space left open, Anderson looked around looking for a defender before rippling the netting.
  • Two quick High Point goals cut the SJU lead to 12-11 headed into the final frame. On the other end of the break, High Point continued their run with the opening three goals of the fourth.
  • Page would cut the Hawk deficit to one with just over two minutes to play, but the Panthers answered immediately from the face-off to regain the advantage.
  • After winning the next face-off, High Point would score the dagger as an attacker was able to escape pressure and stroll to an open net.
  • A consolation goal from Levi Verch proved all the Hawks could muster as High Point knocked off the top seed 16-14 on Robins Field.
