NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Saint Joseph's graduate student Janelle Ward and senior Lily Santi were named the Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Defensive and Offensive Players of the Week, respectively, the conference office announced on Monday afternoon.

Ward turned away all seven shots she faced against #15 UConn in the season opener on Friday, backstopping the 11th-ranked Hawks to a 2-0 win.  She then followed up with 45 more shutout minutes on Sunday as the Hawks topped UMass Lowell, 4-0.  A native of Kitchener, Ontario, Ward made seven appearances off the bench last season and posted a 2-0 record.  This weekend's games marked her first starts in a Hawk uniform.

Santi tallied the opening goal in Friday's win before scoring again on Sunday to finish the weekend with two goals and four points.  The Oceanport, New Jersey, native picked up right where she left off a season ago when she was named the league's Offensive Player of the Year and a Second Team All-America selection.

The Hawks return to action on Friday when they host #6 Virginia at Ellen Ryan Field.  Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
