PHILADELPHIA – For much of Sunday's contest, it seemed like it was time for two of every animal to start lining up to board the ark.
Â
In the end, it was two Hawks that connected on a game-winner deep into the second overtime as
Sol Borensztein fed
Maaike Gorissen for the winning goal to send the 13
th-ranked Saint Joseph's field hockey team to a 4-3 win over Penn at Ellen Vagelos Field.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
• For the second consecutive game, Saint Joseph's (8-2) got off to a quick start, and for the second consecutive game, it was
Celeste Smits feeding
Leigh James for the opening goal three minutes into the game.
Â
• Penn (3-5) would draw level just under three minutes from halftime as Courtney Kenah tipped home a shot on a corner.
Â
• The Hawks took the lead six minutes into the second half when
Lily Santi converted a penalty stroke, but the Quakers equalized again after Allison Kuzyk picked up a loose ball in the circle and fired home with 3:42 to play in the third quarter.
Â
• Santi earned another stroke four minutes into the fourth and fired past Frederique Wollaert for her second of the day and a 3-2 Hawk advantage.
Â
• The hosts equalized yet again on a corner goal from Philine Klas with 8:19 to go; the Hawks would have a corner in the final minute, but could not convert and the game went to overtime.
Â
• SJU controlled much of the possession throughout the first overtime, but Wollaert made a pair of saves to extend the game. With less than four minutes to go in the second extra frame, Borensztein dribbled into the circle from the right wing and sent a pass to Gorissen in front of the cage; her shot beat the keeper low and sent the Hawks home with the win.
Â
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Wollaert made 11 saves for the Quakers, while
Janelle Ward made two for the Hawks, including one at the start of the first overtime period.
Â
• The Hawks matched a season-high with 31 shots and held the Quakers to just six; the Hawks outshot the Quakers 13-1 in the overtime periods. SJU also recorded 12 penalty corners while conceding only two.
Â
• The two goals gave Santi the seventh multi-goal game of her career.
