NEWARK, Del. –
Manu Ghigliotti found the back of the cage late in the first overtime period to lift the seventh-ranked Saint Joseph's field hockey team past Delaware, 1-0, at Rullo Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
• It was a cagey affair early, with each team only taking one shot in the first quarter. Things opened up for the Hawks in the second, but UD goalkeeper Cecile van Eijck kept them off the scoreboard.
Â
• Saint Joseph's (9-2) poured it on in the third, but van Eijck was again up to the task; the Hawks outshot the Blue Hens 7-1 in the frame and earned five penalty corners but could not convert the pressure into a goal.
Â
• Delaware (6-5) had the better of the proceedings in the fourth quarter, forcing
Marith Bijkerk into a pair of saves, but regulation came to an end with neither side finding a winner.
Â
• In the extra stanza, the Hawks earned a penalty corner that led to a second corner attempt; a shot by
Julia Duffhuis then fizzed just wide. Four minutes later, on another re-awarded corner attempt,
Celeste Smits inserted to
Maaike Gorissen, who left it for Ghigliotti to fire low to the corner of the cage to beat van Eijck and the Blue Hens.
Â
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Bijkerk made three saves to secure her third shutout of the season while van Eijck made eight for Delaware.
Â
• Saint Joseph's held a 16-7 advantage in shots and a 13-3 edge in penalty corners.
Â
• The win gives the Hawks a 14-12 all-time record against the Blue Hens, with SJU taking seven of the last eight, including the last four played in Newark.
