HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It was a hot start for Texas that allowed the Longhorns to run out to a 7-2 lead before consecutive Hawks' baskets for Derek Simpson helped cut the lead to three at the first media timeout.
  • Texas continued to hold onto the lead, varying between three and five points before Saint Joseph's went on a 6-0 run, capped by an Anthony Finkley three-pointer as to take its first lead of the night at 18-17 with just more than nine minutes left in the first half.
  • It looked for a brief period as if UT would pull away late in the frame, hitting consecutive treys 50 seconds apart with less than two minutes remaining, but a free throw by Desear Haskins and a triple from Brown before the half closed allowed SJU to trail by just two at the break.
  • The game remained a one-possession contest as the second half approached the midway mark as the Hawks and Longhorns matched each other shot-for-shot, at one point combining to make four consecutive threes as the game was tied 46-46 with 9:10 to play.
  • SJU continued to find its shot as a dunk by Justice Ajogbor was followed by a defensive stop and a fastbreak rim-rocker by Fleming as the Hawks went up 50-46 at the 8:23 mark, forcing a Texas timeout.
  • Momentum swung as the Longhorns went on a 9-2 run that was slowed briefly by an old-fashioned three-point play from Fleming, however Texas maintained its advantage throughout the rest of the contest.
