Opening Tip
The Saint Joseph's men's basketball team returns to Hawk Hill, taking on the Coppin State Eagles on Tuesday, November 26. Tipoff from Hagan Arena is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. with the game being broadcast on ESPN+.
Closing In
Erik Reynolds II continues to move up the career charts for the Hawks in scoring and three-pointers made.
By tallying 26 against Texas Tech, he reached the 1,700-point mark for his career and enters the game against Coppin State at 1,706, just outside the St. Joe's top-10. Norman Black (1975-79) and Maurice Martin (1982-86) are tied for ninth at 1,726. By connecting on seven total three-pointers in the UKG Legends Classic, Reynolds now has 276 career treys. He needs one triple to match Taylor Funk (2017-22) for fourth on the Hawks' career list and two more to catch
Cameron Brown (2019-24) for third.
One For The Record Books
Rasheer Fleming pulled in 20 rebounds against Texas in the championship game of the UKG Legends Classic. It is tied for the most in a single game in NCAA Division I this season. Derek Quinn of Maryland also had 20 against Manhattan on November 4. Fleming becomes the 14th player in St. Joe's history to record 20 rebounds in a game, a feat that has been accomplished just 29 times in the program's 115 seasons.
Props
Beyond the 20 rebound game, Fleming also posted 15.0 points and 13.5 rebounds per game at the Legends Classic, earning him A-10 Player of the Week honors. The junior from Camden had 16 points and 20 boards against Texas. Prior to that, he posted 14 points and seven rebounds against No. 24 Texas Tech. He also shot 54.5 percent (12-for-22) from the floor in the two games.
Rank And File
The win against No. 24 Texas Tech on Thursday night was the first victory for the Hawks against a ranked opponent since topping No. 15 Villanova on November 29, 2023. It was the 45th all-time win for St. Joe's against a ranked opponent.
Line It Up
Xzayvier Brown's performance at the free throw line against Texas Tech wasn't just impressive it was historic. By going 13-for-13, he had the second most makes in a game without a miss in SJU history. The only work from the charity stripe better was Mike Hauer who went 15-for-15 at the line at Seton Hall on February 21, 1970.
Scouting Report
Coppin State enters play 0-7 on the season and is coming off a 93-55 loss to fellow A-10 member George Mason on November 20.
The Eagles are led offensively by Derrius Ward at 12.4 points per game. Julius Ellerbe III also averages double figures at 10.0 a contest. Ellerbe pulls in 6.0 rebounds a night. Cam'Ron Brown tops the team with 17 assists, followed by Toby Nnadozie who has 11 dimes.
Home games have been few and far between for CSU. Tuesday will be its seventh road game this season and its fifth in a row. The Eagles will play 11 of their 14 non-conference games this season away from The Physical Education Complex in Baltimore.
One area that Coppin State has done better than most in the MEAC is not send opponents to the free throw line. It is third best in the conference in fewest fouls per game.
Points have been hard to come by for the Eagles who rank at the bottom of the MEAC and are 352nd out of 355 teams in NCAA Division I in scoring offense at 54.7 per game. They are also in the bottom five in field goal percentage at 34.7 percent.
Alumnus Larry Stewart is in his second season as the head coach at Coppin State. He has surrounded himself with people who understand the history and tradition of Eagles' basketball as all of his assistants are CSU alums.
