Saint Joseph’s and Men’s Soccer Head Coach Don D’Ambra ‘94 Mutually Agree to Part Ways

11/4/2024 12:00:00 PM

Saint Joseph's University Vice President and Director of Athletics Jill Bodensteiner announced today that the University and Head Men's Soccer Coach Don D'Ambra '94 have mutually agreed to part ways effective immediately.

"Don has led our men's soccer program with dedication and integrity for 15 years," said Bodensteiner. "We thank Don for his commitment and contributions to Saint Joseph's soccer – as a student-athlete and a coach – and wish him and his family the best in the future."

D'Ambra has guided his squads to 69 combined victories and a pair of Atlantic 10 Championship appearances over the past 15 seasons. In 2013, D'Ambra helped St. Joe's return to the conference postseason for the first time since 1994, while in 2021, St. Joe's turned in its best A-10 finish as the Hawks tied for second in the conference standings.

Individually, D'Ambra guided seven Hawks to A-10 All-Conference accolades, while five St. Joe's student-athletes were named to A-10 All-Rookie Teams. The Hawks additionally excelled in the classroom under D'Ambra as David Grana garnered Academic All-America accolades three times and Alan Kahlenbeck once. Along with the national recognition, 10 Saint Joseph's student-athletes were selected to the A-10 All-Academic Team.

"Under Don's guidance, our men's soccer student-athletes have performed exceptionally well in the classroom, and have contributed significantly to the University community," said Bodensteiner. "Don is a class act who will be missed by his student-athletes and colleagues on Hawk Hill."

One of the most decorated Hawks in program history, D'Ambra was a Regional All-America First Team selection and Philadelphia Soccer Seven Player of the Year and remains the only player in Hawk history to earn the Atlantic 10 Player of the Year award, winning it in 1993. Inducted into SJU's Men's Soccer Hall of Fame in 2000, D'Ambra returned to Saint Joseph's in 2010 after a successful coaching and playing career with the Philadelphia KiXX of the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) in which he helped the KiXX to two MISL championships, as a player in 2002 and player/coach in 2007.

Saint Joseph's will immediately begin a comprehensive search for its next men's soccer head coach.
