Baseball Tops Gardner-Webb, 6-2

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Saint Joseph's baseball team notched a win in its first road contest of the season, using a three-run first and a three-run ninth to power past Gardner-Webb, 6-2, at John Henry Moss Stadium on Friday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (2-0) jumped out to a lead right away as Conlan Wall led off the game with a walk and scored on a triple by Ryan Weingartner.  Luke Zimmerman followed with an RBI single to plate Weingartner; he would come around to score himself on a groundout by Owen Petrich three batters later.

• Hawk starter Will McCausland kept the Runnin' Bulldogs off balance through the first six innings, but the hosts would break through for a singleton in the seventh on a two-out single by Ethan Rossow.

• The Hawks added some key insurance runs in the top half of the ninth.  A walk by Petrich, a single from Jakob Reed, and a walk by Brandon Drapeau loaded the bases with nobody out for Max Hitman, whose sacrifice fly scored Petrich to restore the three-run advantage.  Reed would score on a wild pitch two batters later before Drapeau came in on a single by Weingartner to make it a five-run lead.

• Gardner-Webb (1-4) loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the frame, but managed just a single consolation run on a sac fly by Matt Ilgenfritz.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• McCausland was outstanding on Friday, scattering three hits and striking out 10 across six shutout innings for his first win of the season.  He did not allow a runner past second base and fanned five of the last seven batters he faced.

• Blake Brogdon allowed three runs on three hits in five innings to fall to 0-2.

• Weingartner finished the day 3-for-5 with a run scored and two runs batted in.  He ripped a pair of triples in the game, the sixth time in program history that a Hawk has recorded a two-triple game and the first since Brendan Hueth against UMass on April 10, 2021.

• Ryan Picollo added two hits as well, while both Petrich and Wall reached base twice in the game.
