WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Saint Joseph's baseball team fell to UNC Wilmington in heartbreaking fashion on Sunday as the hosts came back for a 4-3 win at Brooks Field.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (5-8) loaded the bases in the top of the first but could not push a run across. Hawk starter
Domenic Picone would strand three Seahawks over the first two innings before retiring seven batters in a row to keep the game scoreless through four.
Â
• UNC Wilmington (9-7) would get on the board in the fifth without the benefit of a hit. A one-out wild pitch allowed Bryan Arendt to score before an error brought home Kyle Dobos to double the lead.
Â
• The Hawks found a spark in the top of the sixth as
Ryan Picollo and
Justin Igoe hit solo home runs to tie the game at 2-2.
Â
• Picone then made way for
Matt McShane, who struck out seven of the first nine batters he faced to carry the Hawks into the ninth.
Â
• Igoe led off the final frame with a walk; pinch runner
Colin Myers then moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt by pinch hitter
Paul Kokol.
Â
•Â
Brandon Drapeau followed with an infield single to put runners on the corners for pinch hitter
Tim Dickinson, who beat out a relay on a fielder's choice to allow Myers to score the go-ahead run.
Â
• McShane would then fan the first two batters in the bottom of the ninth before engaging in a 12-pitch duel with Arendt; with the count 1-2, Arendt homered to left for the Seahawks' first hit of the game and a 3-3 tie.
Â
• After a pitching change, a walk, an infield single, and a hit batter loaded the bases for Trevor Marsh, whose single plated pinch runner Dylan Schaefer with the winning run.
Â
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Connor Marshburn got all three outs in the ninth for UNCW, earning the win to improve to 3-0 on the season.Â
Colin Yablonski took the loss for SJU.
Â
• Picone tossed five hitless innings, allowing two runs – one earned – while striking out seven. McShane allowed just the one run and one hit while striking out nine of the 12 batters he faced.
Â
• Zane Taylor got the start for the Seahawks, also striking out nine while allowing two runs on four hits in five and two-thirds innings.
Â
•Â
Ryan Weingartner recorded the only multi-hit game of the day, going 2-for-4 with a double for the Hawks. Igoe and
Conlan Wall also reached base twice for SJU.
