PHILADELPHIA – The Saint Joseph's baseball team topped Penn, 8-3, on a rainy Wednesday afternoon at Tommy Lasorda Field at Meiklejohn Stadium.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Hawks jumped in front right from the get-go as
Conlan Wall was hit by a pitch to lead off the game and came in to score on a double by
Ryan Cesarini.Â
Owen Petrich would hit a sacrifice fly to score Cesarini and give the Hawks a 2-0 lead after an inning.
Â
• Penn (14-18) got on the board in the fourth on a bases-loaded walk by Gavin Collins, but a three-run sixth gave the Hawks some breathing room. With two on and one out,
Ryan Picollo bea tout an infield single to bring home Cesarini; two batters later,
Brandon Drapeau hit a sac fly to make it a 4-1 game.Â
Jakob Reed then followed with an RBI infield single of his own to push the advantage to four.
Â
• Saint Joseph's (14-18) would extend the lead again in the seventh on a double steal as
Ryan Weingartner took second and Cesarini swiped home. Weingartner would add a pair of RBI with a home run in the ninth; the Quakers tallied two consolation runs in the bottom of the frame but would get no closer.
Â
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
•Â
Luke Gabrysh was credited with the win after two shutout innings of relief, while Noah Millikan gave up two runs on two hits in two and two-thirds to take the loss.
Â
• Cesarini finished the day 3-for-5 with three runs scored and one driven in, while Weingartner, Petrich, and Picollo notched two hits apiece and combined for three runs scored and four RBI.
Â
• Cesarini stole four bases on the day as well, tying the single-game record set by Mike Sposato, also in a game at Penn, on March 24, 1998.
