PLYMOUTH TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The Saint Joseph's baseball team used an offensive breakout on Tuesday to take a 12-8 win over Villanova at Villanova Ballpark at Plymouth.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (18-22) opened the scoring right away as
Conlan Wall led off the game with a double and came in to score on a two-out double by
Owen Petrich.Â
Justin Igoe then followed with a single to score Petrich and extend the advantage to 2-0.
Â
• Consecutive singles by
Ryan Picollo and
Brandon Drapeau started the second inning for the Hawks before
Jakob Reed was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Wall, who singled home a pair to double the lead. Reed then came in to score on a wild pitch to make it a 5-0 game before Petrich blooped a double down the right field line to score Wall and push the margin to six after two.
Â
• The Hawks tacked one on in the third after
Tim Dickinson singled and eventually came in on a squeeze bunt by
Brandon Drapeau. The Wildcats then got on the board in the bottom of the inning to make it 7-1 after three.
Â
• Villanova (14-28) cut the deficit again in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by Shane Solari, but the Hawks answered in the fifth as Igoe singled, Dickinson doubled, and
Ryan Picollo brought them home with a three-run home run to make it 10-2.
Â
• The Wildcats clawed back into the game on run-scoring hits by Scott Shaw and Michael Whooley in the fifth and a two-run home run by Cameron Hassert in the sixth. A sacrifice fly by Josue Valdez and a double by Solari in the bottom of the seventh then closed the gap to 10-8.
Â
• In the eighth, one-out singles by Reed and Wall set the table for a
Ryan Cesarini RBI single to up the Hawk lead by a run. Cesarini would then swipe second base and Wall would come home on an errant throw to make it a 12-8 game.
Â
• The hosts put a runner on in the eighth, but
Matt McShane came on to retire the final four batters of the game to seal the win.
Â
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
