Baseball Stifles Saint Louis, 7-3, in Weekend Finale

MERION STATION, Pa. – The Saint Joseph's baseball team earned a big win on Sunday, taking a 7-3 result against Saint Louis at Smithson Field to clinch the weekend series.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Louis (21-8 overall, 4-2 Atlantic 10) struck first as the first four batters of the game reached base.  Ethan Sitzman scored an unearned run on an error, but SJU starter Domenic Picone notched a strikeout and induced a double play to escape a bases-loaded, nobody-out jam.

• The Hawks answered in the bottom of the frame, once again hanging a three-spot on the board for the second day in a row.  Ryan Weingartner was hit by a pitch and went to third on a double by Ryan Cesarini; Owen Petrich then tied the game with an RBI groundout before Tim Dickinson continued his hot weekend with a two-run home run to give SJU a 3-1 lead.

• Chase Beattie led off the second with a home run for the Billikens, but Brandon Drapeau led off the bottom of the inning with a double and came around to score when Conlan Wall reached via an error.  Wall would then come around to score on a sacrifice fly by Petrich to make it a 5-2 game.

• Saint Joseph's (12-16 overall, 3-3 Atlantic 10) extended its lead in the fourth after Cesarini and Petrich drew two-out walks and Dickinson singled home Cesarini.

• An RBI groundout from Knox Preston in the fifth cut the Hawk margin to three, but Petrich would single home Wall in the eighth with an insurance run to set the final score.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Picone allowed three runs – two of them earned – on eight hits while striking out five in five and a third innings to get the win.  Alec Rodriguez notched the save after tossing three and two-thirds shutout innings of relief, allowing two hits and fanning seven.  Owen Chaffin started for SLU and took the loss after allowing three runs on two hits, a walk, and a hit batter in just one inning of work.

• Petrich and Dickinson turned in three-RBI performances, while Cesarini and Dickinson enjoyed multi-hit days.  Wall and Cesarini each scored a pair of runs, with Cesarini reaching safely in four of his five plate appearances.

• The series win is the first for the Hawks over the Billikens since 2016.
