Saint Joseph's head tennis coach
Jeff Puhan has announced the addition of four student-athletes to the women's program as transfer
Wiktoria Czerny will join incoming freshmen
Addison Melfi,
Claudia Perez-Garcia, and
Gisele Tang on the Hawk roster.
"I'm very excited for these new additions to our program," Puhan said. "These four new student-athletes committed to Saint Joseph's both for our academic profile and the vision we have for our tennis program. There are exciting things happening here and we're looking forward to getting started with our season!"
Czerny is a native of Warsaw, Poland, and spent the previous three seasons at Longwood University. While with the Lancers, she earned more than 30 victories across both singles and doubles play, including 11 singles wins as a sophomore during the 2022-23 season.
Melfi hails from Boca Raton, Florida, and was recently a quarterfinalist at the 2024 ITA Southern New Hampshire Summer Points Race Series event. A year ago, she reached the finals of the Georgia Open and was a doubles champion in the UTR Series.
"I chose SJU because of the Jesuit culture, the kind and welcoming community, the great city of Philadelphia, and of course the tennis program led by Coach Puhan," Melfi said. "I believe he will take St. Joe's tennis to the next level and I'm excited to be part of it."
Perez-Garcia, a product of San Juan, Puerto Rico, graduated with top honors from Academia Maria Reina, where she was the named her team's Most Valuable Player each of the last three years. She also earned the top ranking among U14s, U16s, and U18s in her native Puerto Rico and represented her country in the USTA's Battle of the Sections.
"I chose Saint Joseph's due to its academic excellence and the opportunity to improve my academic standing, as well as the strong athletic programs, particularly in tennis," Perez said. "I also value the inclusive and supportive community where you can excel academically, athletically, and personally."
Tang is the sixth-ranked player in Pennsylvania and represented the Middle States team at the Battle of the Sections; she is also ranked in the top 20 across the Middle States section. She earned Unionville High School's Scott Petruno Memorial Award, and off the court was a finalist at the Pennsylvania Invention Convention.
"I chose St. Joe's because it's located in Philadelphia, and there's no place like home," Tang, a native of West Chester, Pennsylvania, said. "It's beautiful and the people are so welcoming."
The quartet will join the Hawks in time for the fall slate of competition.
