#13 Field Hockey Tops New Hampshire, 4-2

STORRS, Conn. – A goal in each quarter powered the 13th-ranked Saint Joseph's field hockey team past New Hampshire, 4-2, at Nancy Stevens Field on Saturday afternoon.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (1-1) took the lead six minutes into the game as Alison Buffington tallied her second goal in as many days to give the Hawks a 1-0 edge.
 
• Lily Santi doubled the lead early in the second quarter on an assist from Julia Duffhuis, but the Wildcats got back within one with about 10 minutes remaining in the frame on a goal by Nicole Pulakis that cut the margin to 2-1 heading into halftime.
 
• The Hawks restored the two-goal margin shortly after the break as Santi fed Manu Ghigliotti for her first of the season less than a minute and a half into the third quarter.
 
• New Hampshire (0-1) answered with four minutes to play in the third when Brecken Calcari scored to make it a 3-2 game, but Sol Borensztein netted her first of the season on an assist from Celeste Smits with just under three minutes remaining for a key insurance goal.
 
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Kerigan Ross made six saves for UNH, while Shannon McNally collected four stops in a winning effort.
 
• Santi totaled three points on the day; she tallied three goals and an assist on the weekend for seven points to start the season.
 
• The Hawks held an 11-8 advantage in shots, and put all 11 of them on the cage; SJU also earned 10 penalty corners on the day while conceding six.
 
UP NEXT
The Hawks will host 16th-ranked Penn State on Friday, September 6.  A pre-game ceremony will be held to mark the first game on the new playing surface at Ellen Ryan Field before the 3:00 p.m. matchup.
