#13 Field Hockey Soars Past Villanova, 6-2

MERION STATION, Pa. – Manu Ghigliotti and Celeste Smits scored two goals apiece as the 13th-ranked Saint Joseph's field hockey team routed Villanova, 6-2, at Ellen Ryan Field on Friday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (4-1) earned the day's first penalty corner just over four minutes into the game and the Hawks made it count as Smits inserted and then tipped a ball from Julia Duffhuis past Villanova's Maddi Sears for a 1-0 lead.

• Ghigliotti doubled the lead with 3:17 to go in the first quarter, dribbling into the circle and firing home from just inside the arc.

• She struck again early in the second quarter, forcing a Wildcat defender into a turnover in front of the cage and punishing the mistake with her second goal of the day.

• Villanova (2-3) got on the board early in the second half through Emma Schwarz, but Lily Santi restored the three-goal margin after slotting home a pass from Ghigliotti on a corner with 4:54 to go in the third.

• Smits extended the lead 90 seconds later, collecting the rebound off a Sears save and finding paydirt for the second time.

• Sabine de Ruijter converted on a penalty corner for the Wildcats early in the fourth, but Milou Kluyt did the same for the Hawks with 16 seconds left to finish off the scoring.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Marith Bijkerk got the start for the Hawks and made a pair of saves before Shannon McNally came on in relief for the fourth quarter.  Sears made three stops for the Wildcats.

• Ghigliotti finished the day with five points; Smits added four and Santi chipped in with three.

• Friday marked the first multi-goal game of Smits' career and the sixth for Ghigliotti.
