#10 Field Hockey Tops #5 Duke in Shootout, 1-0

DURHAM, N.C. – The 10th-ranked Saint Joseph's field hockey team notched its first-ever top-5 road victory, beating fifth-ranked Duke, 1-0, in a shootout at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (7-1) dominated the first quarter, outshooting the Blue Devils 5-1 and earning five penalty corners, but could not convert a chance into a goal.

• Duke (4-3) turned things around in the middle periods, holding a 5-0 edge in shots and a 3-0 advantage in corners through the second and third quarters.

• The Hawks regained the initiative in the fourth, holding a 5-0 shot advantage of their own while earning a pair of corners.  Frederique Wollaert made two saves for the hosts to keep things scoreless heading into overtime.

• It was Marith Bijkerk's turn to shine in overtime as she made a pair of saves in the first extra period to keep the Hawks in the game.  Both teams would ultimately record four shots and earn one penalty corner, but neither side found a winner.

• Maaike Gorissen gave the Hawks a lead in the shootout before Alaina McVeigh brought the hosts level.  Both Bijkerk and substitute keeper Kaiya Chepow made stops in the second and third rounds before Julia Duffhuis converted in the fourth for the Hawks.

• Bijkerk then kept Duke off the board in the final two rounds to seal the dramatic victory.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Bijkerk made three saves for her second shutout in three days; Wollaert made two stops for Duke.

• SJU held a 14-10 advantage in shots on the day and earned eight penalty corners while conceding four.  The Blue Devils had allowed just 3.5 corner attempts per game coming into Sunday's game.

• The win marks the highest-ranked team the Hawks have defeated on the road in program history.

• It's also the first shootout win for the Hawks; Saint Joseph's lost both its previous shootouts, falling to Fairfield in 2013 and Lock Haven in the spring of 2021.
