CHICAGO – The Saint Joseph's men's basketball team erased a 17-point halftime deficit to take a second half lead, but the Loyola Chicago Ramblers hit a trio of free throws with 2.2 seconds remaining as the Ramblers escaped against the Hawks 58-55 on Saturday afternoon.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Erik Reynolds II scored 17, his 99th carer game in double figures.
- Rasheer Fleming tallied 12 and hauled in 13 rebounds for his eighth double-double of the season and his ninth with 10 or more boards.
- Xzayvier Brown netted 14 with six boards. He hit at least 10 free throws for the second straight contest.
- Justice Ajogbor continued his torrid pace of blocking shots, coming away with a season-high five. He has multiple blocks in 11 consecutive games and is averaging 3.2 during the span.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- It was a slow start for the Hawks, but SJU never let Loyola get out to more than a seven-point lead in the early going, thanks to some early three-point shooting.
- St. Joe's turned up the defense, forcing the Ramblers to miss six shots in a row and holding LUC off the board for more than four minutes. Unfortunately, the offense was unable to match the defensive effort and dent the lead as the Hawks trailed 14-10 at the midway mark of the frame.
- For as much as they battled, it remained a cold shooting half for the Hawks, who found themselves down by double digits at the break.
- Opening the second half, Saint Joseph's made a concerted effort to get the ball inside. The plan worked as SJU opened on an 8-0 run with six of the points coming at the free throw line.
- After the Ramblers pushed the lead up to 39-27, once again the Hawks went on the attack, using an 11-2 run, closing the gap to 41-38 on a Reynolds steal and score with 12:52 left.
- From that point, the squads traded baskets for the next handful of minutes with the Hawks slicing the edge to a single point on a couple of occasions. As time wound down towards two minutes remaining, Reynolds drove to the right side and hit the layup, tying the game at 53-53.
- On the ensuing possession, Fleming was fouled on a rebound and made both at the line to give SJU its first lead of the night at 55-53 with 1:36 to go.
