CONWAY, S.C. – The Saint Joseph's baseball team scored five runs in the ninth, but the comeback effort ultimately fell short as the Hawks lost to Washington, 12-9, at Springs Brooks Stadium on Monday.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (1-3) took the lead in the bottom of the first on a solo home run by
Owen Petrich.
Â
• Washington (3-1) scored twice in the top of the second, but Petrich struck again in the third to give the Hawks the lead. After singles by
Sam Meyer and
Alex Kelsey and a walk to
Tim Dickinson, Petrich followed with a double down the left field line to plate a pair and put the Hawks back on top, 3-2.
Â
• The Huskies went back in front with a pair of two-out tallies in the fourth, but the Hawks answered in the sixth as a
Carson Applegate walk and an
Aidan Duda single set up an RBI double by
Joey Gale that tied the game at 4-4.
Â
• Washington scored three times in the seventh and once more in the eighth before hanging four on the board in the ninth.
Â
• The Hawks clawed their way back into things in the final frame. Gale led off with a double before a pinch hit walk by
Dean Bergmann brought Kelsey to the plate; his double scored Gale before a walk to Dickinson loaded the bases. Petrich then hit into a double play that brought home Bergmann before a
Joey Pagano single scored Kelsey to cut the deficit to five. Applegate followed with a two-run home run to cut it to three, but after Duda singled to put the tying run on deck, Josh Emanuels came out of the bullpen to notch a strikeout and end the game.
Â
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Emanuels saved the win for Isaac Yeager, who allowed a run on two hits in two and two-thirds innings in relief of starter Bradley Gilbert.Â
Nathan Stein started and took the loss for Saint Joseph's after being charged with four runs on five hits in three and two-thirds innings.
Â
• Kelsey, Petrich, Duda, and Gale each notched two hits for the Hawks, with Kelsey and Applegate each scoring twice as well. Petrich added three runs batted in on the day.
