Baseball Splits Twinbill at Mount St. Mary’s

EMMITSBURG, Md. – The Saint Joseph's baseball team dropped a heartbreaker in Saturday's opening game before Colton Book turned in a dominant performance in the second, taking a no-hitter into the final inning, as the Hawks split a doubleheader with Mount St. Mary's at E.T. Straw Stadium on Saturday.

GAME 1: Mount St. Mary's 10, Saint Joseph's 7

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (2-4) took the lead in the top of the second as Carson Applegate walked, Joey Pagano singled, and Aidan Duda followed with a two-run double.

• The hosts answered in the bottom of the frame with a double from Evan Meier, but a solo home run from Tim Dickinson in the top of the third restored the two-run advantage.

• Mateo Zeppieri hit a solo shot for the Mountaineers in the bottom of the fourth, but the Hawks extended the lead with a three-spot in the fifth.  A double by Sam Meyer and a single from Dickinson put runners on the corners with one out for Owen Petrich, who singled home Meyer to make it a 4-2 game.  Applegate then followed with a two-run double to put the Hawks ahead, 6-2.

• Mount St. Mary's (4-1) added one more in the bottom of the fifth, and it would remain a three-run game until the ninth.  Alex Kelsey led off with a single and stole second before eventually moving to third and then scoring on a single by Applegate.

• Zeppieri hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the inning to get the Mount back within a pair at 7-5.  A pair of RBI singles tied the game before a pair of walks brought up Bryce Rudisill, whose three-run home run won it.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Dom Capperella earned the win for the Mountaineers, allowing a run on two hits in one inning.  Luke Parise took the loss for the Hawks.

• Applegate collected three hits and drove in three runs in the game, while Dickinson and Petrich each had a pair of hits.  Dickinson scored two runs while Duda drove in a pair.

• Frank Ciccone had a strong start on the mound for SJU, allowing two earned runs on four hits while striking out six in five innings.

GAME 2: Saint Joseph's 7, Mount St. Mary's 0 (F/7)

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Neither team was able to light the scoreboard until the Hawks took the lead in the fourth.  Blake Primrose led off with a double before Alex Kelsey tripled him home for a 1-0 lead.

• Joey Gale led off the sixth with a walk before Kelsey singled to put two on with nobody out.  Dickinson followed with an RBI double; Applegate hit a sacrifice fly two batters later to extend the lead to 3-0.  Dean Bergmann followed with a double to score Dickinson and push the advantage to 4-0.

Michael Pierson led off the seventh with a walk and eventually came in to score on a wild pitch; Gale walked as well and came in on a passed ball.  Petrich drew a walk of his own before scoring the final run of the game on a double by Applegate.

• Book retired the first batter of the seventh before losing his no-hit bid.  Two batters later, he induced a groundout from his younger brother, Nolan, to end the game and secure the shutout.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Book was magnificent for the second consecutive week, allowing just the one hit and one walk in seven shutout innings.  He struck out 14 hitters – one shy of the school record of 15 set by Rich Bogle and matched by Jordan Carter, although both occurred in nine-inning games – and faced just one batter above the minimum.

• Serigne Sarre took the loss for the Mount, allowing a run on eight hits in four and two-thirds innings.

• Applegate turned in another three-hit performance, while Kelsey and Bergmann had two apiece.  Gale scored twice while Applegate drove in a pair.
