Baseball Falls to Mount St. Mary’s, 6-3

MERION STATION, Pa. – The Saint Joseph's baseball team fell to Mount St. Mary's, 6-3, in the rubber game of a weekend series at Smithson Field on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Mount St. Mary's (5-1) took the lead in the top of the second inning on a double steal, but the Hawks tied the game in the bottom of the inning.  Aidan Duda was hit by a pitch and Michael Pierson drew a walk before a Colin Myers sacrifice bunt put two runners in scoring position with one out.  Two batters later, a wild pitch scored Duda and tied the game.

• The Mountaineers scored twice in the third to take the lead but Saint Joseph's (2-5) answered in the fourth.  Pierson and Myers were hit by pitches to start the inning; a Sam Meyer double and an Alex Kelsey single each plated a run to make it a 3-3 game.

• Unfortunately for the Crimson and Gray, the visitors got one in the seventh and two in the eighth to go ahead.  The Hawks loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth, bringing the winning run to the plate, but Max McCrary got the final out to end the game.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• McCrary allowed three hits in four shutout innings to earn the win, while Jaden Ovalles took the loss for the Hawks.  Neither starter figured in the decision, as Nathan Stein allowed three runs on six hits and struck out six in five innings for SJU, while Eli DeRossi allowed three runs on three hits and three walks in five innings for the Mount.

• Kelsey recorded two hits to lead the Hawks on Sunday.
