WASHINGTON, D.C. – Four players scored in double figures as the Saint Joseph's men's basketball team downed the George Washington Revolutionaries 79-68 on Wednesday night.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Erik Reynolds II scored 19 in the game. In six career games against GW, he has scored at least 17 in each contest.
- Rasheer Fleming had his ninth double-double of the season with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
- Xzayvier Brown scored 14 with six assists.
- The bench played a big role for SJU in the opening 20 minutes as Dasear Haskins, Shawn Simmons II and Derek Simpson combined for 11 points, four rebounds and four assists.
- Simpson finished the game with 11 points and six assists.
- Justice Ajogbor rejected five shots in the game, his 11th game this season with three or more and his 17th contest with multiple blocks. He is averaging 3.07 BPG in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Hawks got off to a slow start from the floor, connecting on five of their first 14 shots as the Revolutionaries built a 17-11 lead at the 10:57 mark of the first half.
- St. Joe's started to work the ball inside, using a pair of free throws and then a trio of layups and dunks for an 8-0 run, giving SJU its first lead of the night at 19-17 in just two minutes.
- The teams continued to battle back and forth, exchanging the lead five times in the final eight minutes of the stanza. A pair of three-pointers in the final 2:39 of the half by Fleming and Reynolds helped Saint Joseph's take a 39-36 lead into intermission.
- Coming out of the locker room, the Hawks were firing early, going 3-for-5, including a pair of treys in the opening four minutes, extending the advantage to 48-40 at the 15:44 mark.
- The second half surge continued as a triple by Brown put St. Joe's on top by 16 with 12:48 remaining, forcing a Revolutionaries timeout.
- Threes were a big part of getting back into the contest and building the lead as after a slow start from deep, the Hawks hit 7-of-9 in a 12-minute span that bridged halftime and saw Saint Joseph's outscore George Washington 32-15.
- The Revolutionaries battled back as a floater banked in to slice the lead to 66-49 with just less than six minutes remaining.
- Saint Joseph's had to withstand an extended possession for GW, keeping the Revs off the board before sealing the game at the line.
