MERION STATION, Pa. – Another strong outing from
Colton Book and a season-high 12 runs powered the Saint Joseph's baseball team to a 12-5 rout of Richmond at Smithson Field on Saturday afternoon.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
•
Blake Primrose staked Saint Joseph's (8-13 overall, 3-2 Atlantic 10) to a lead in the bottom of the second, taking Chase Topolski deep to left for his first collegiate home run and a 1-0 Hawk advantage.
Â
• Richmond (19-4 overall, 3-2 Atlantic 10) went ahead in the top of the fifth on a double by Aaron Whitley and a single by Jordan Jaffe.
Â
• The Hawks went right to work on regaining the lead in the bottom of the frame. Primrose,
Dean Bergmann, and
Michael Pierson led off the inning with walks to load the bases with nobody out and chase Topolski from the game.Â
Joey Gale then greeted reliever Glenn Smith with two-run double to put the Hawks back in front before
Alex Kelsey brought home two more with a single.
Â
•
Tim Dickinson then ripped a double down the right field line to bring Kelsey around and make it a 6-2 game; two batters later, an
Owen Petrich double scored Dickinson to make it 7-2.Â
Joey Pagano followed with a two-run home run to right for a 9-2 Saint Joseph's advantage.
Â
• Mike Elko hit an RBI single for the Spiders in the sixth to make it a 9-3 game, but the Hawks got the run back and then some in the seventh. Dickinson led off the inning with a home run before walks from
Carson Applegate and Petrich put two on for
Sam Meyer, who singled home Applegate to extend the lead to eight. A Bergmann sacrifice fly later in the inning scored Petrich to give the Hawks a 12-3 lead.
Â
• The Spiders scratched across two more in the eighth on a single by DJ Pacheco, but that would be all as the Hawks clinched the series victory.
Â
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Book turned in another strong start on the mound, improving to 4-1 on the season after allowing three runs on seven hits, walking one and striking out eight, in seven innings.Â
Dylan Duke tossed the final two innings, allowing just a hit and a walk to go with a strikeout.
Â
• Topolski took the loss after allowing four runs on one hit and four walks in four-plus innings.
Â
• Dickinson and Primrose each had a two-hit game, while Petrich joined the duo with two runs scored apiece. Kelsey, Dickinson, Pagano, and Gale each drove in a pair as well.
Â
• The 12 runs are a season high, as are the three home runs.
Â
• Each Hawk batter in the lineup reached base in the game.
