MERION STATION, Pa. –
Aidan Duda's eighth-inning single brought in what proved to be the winning run as the Saint Joseph's baseball team topped Davidson, 6-5, at Smithson Field on Thursday afternoon.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (17-17 overall, 11-5 Atlantic 10) took the lead right out of the gates as
Joey Pagano beat out an infield single before
Owen Petrich hit a home run to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead after one inning.
Â
• Davidson (15-21 overall, 10-6 Atlantic 10) got the runs back right away in the top of the second on a two-run single by JD Woodall. The Wildcats took the lead in the third on a double by Michael O'Shaughnessy.
Â
•Â
Tim Dickinson led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run to tie the game. Two batters later,
Michael Pierson reached on an error; an infield single by
Joey Gale and a walk to
Alex Kelsey then loaded the bases for
Carson Applegate, whose ground ball was mishandled, allowing the go-ahead run to score. Pagano then followed with an RBI groundout to give the Hawks a 5-3 advantage.
Â
• Davidson cut the deficit to one after a fielding error in the top of the sixth, and then tied the game in the seventh on a single by Anthony Torreso.
Â
• Pagano led off the eighth with a single and moved up to second base on a ground ball before being lifted for pinch runner
Sam Meyer. Duda would go on to single him home with two outs to put the Hawks back on top.
Â
• The Wildcats got the tying run in scoring position with two outs in the ninth, but a battle between
Dylan Duke and Torreso went Duke's way when Torreso was called out for leaning into a 3-2 pitch, the 11
th of the at bat, to end the game.
Â
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Duke earned the win, striking out two in an inning and a third of shutout relief. Simon Yochum took the loss, allowing a run on two hits in two innings.
Â
• Neither starter figured into the decision, as
Jackson Campbell allowed two earned runs in three innings for the Hawks and Wilson Perkins was charged with five runs in six innings for the Wildcats.
Â
• Pagano posted a multi-hit day for the Hawks, while Petrich drove in a pair with his home run.
