MERION STATION, Pa. – The Saint Joseph's baseball team rallied in the ninth but could not complete the comeback, falling to Davidson, 11-10, at Smithson Field on Friday afternoon.
Owen Petrich tied a program record in the game, hitting three home runs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Neither team broke through until the third inning, when the Wildcats put five runs on the board on a three-run double by Michael O'Shaughnessy, a double by Anthony Torreso, and a single by Noah Jouras.
• Davidson (16-21 overall, 11-6 Atlantic 10) tacked on two more in the fourth on a double by Cider Canon.
• Saint Joseph's (17-18 overall, 11-6 Atlantic 10) got on the board in the bottom of the fourth as Petrich and
Blake Primrose hit back-to-back solo home runs to cut the deficit back to five.
• Petrich struck again in the bottom of the sixth with another solo shot to make it a 7-3 game, but the Wildcats scored one in the seventh on another RBI single by Jouras.
•
Tim Dickinson drew a walk to start the seventh and went to third on a single by
Aidan Duda; two batters later,
Joey Gale reached on a fielder's choice that brought home Dickinson and cut the deficit to 8-4.
• Torreso would hit into a fielder's choice that brought home a run in the top of the eighth, but the Hawks answered after a
Joey Pagano walk was followed by Petrich's third longball of the day to make it 9-6.
• Eli Putnam added two insurance runs in the ninth that would ultimately prove vital for the Wildcats with a double to left.
• In the bottom of the frame, Duda was hit by a pitch before Gale reached on an error. With two outs,
Carson Applegate ripped a single to left to score Duda before Pagano came up and hit a three-run home run to bring the Hawks back within a run. The Wildcats' Jacob Vokal ultimately recorded the final out to end the Hawk comeback a run short.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Petrich is the third Hawk to hit three home runs in one game, and Friday marked the fourth occurrence of the feat in program history. Deon Stafford, Jr., pulled it off twice in the 2016 season – once at Richmond, and once at home against Fordham – and Nate Thomas went deep three times at Smithson Field against George Mason in 2022. He finished the day 3-for-4 with three runs scored and four driven in.
• Isaac Fix allowed three runs on five hits in six innings to earn the win for Davidson, while
Frank Ciccone took the loss for the Hawks after allowing seven runs on seven hits in three and a third innings.
• Dickinson had a multi-hit game in addition to Petrich, while Pagano scored twice and drove in three runs.
• The loss ends a season-best seven-game winning streak for the Hawks.
