Track Duo Earns Atlantic 10 Outdoor All-Rookie Team Honors

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Two members of the Saint Joseph's track and field team were named to the Atlantic 10 Outdoor All-Rookie Team, conference officials announced on Thursday. Sammy Walz and Tommy Silvester nabbed spots to the All-Rookie Team, adding to their A-10 Indoor All-Rookie Team accolades earned earlier this year.
 
After setting the conference's fastest time among freshmen in the 60m during the indoor season, Walz remained the fastest rookie on the track in the 100m during the outdoor season. Setting her season-high at the Bison Outdoor Classic, the Staten Island, New York. native clocked in an 11.94s performance at Bucknell. Walz ranked in the top 50 for fastest time among all competitors in the event in the Mid-Atlantic region and one of just 53 runners to finish with a sub-12 second time in the event. In addition to her season success in the 100m, Walz helped the Hawks to a scoring finish in the 4x400m relay with an eighth-place finish at the A-10 Outdoor Championships.
 
Silvester continued a strong debut campaign in the outdoor season, setting the second-fastest time in the 800m among freshmen in the Mid-Atlantic region – 25th fastest in the NCAA among freshmen – with a time of 1:49.37 at the Paul Donahue Invitational. The Coatesville, Pennsylvania, native finished second in the 800m at the A-10 Outdoor Championships, earning the silver medal in the event. Silvester returned to the track to help the St. Joe's 4x800m relay team earn gold with a time of 7:31.88. The freshman also set the fastest rookie time in the 500m in the indoor season to earn All-Rookie Team plaudits.
