Simpson Scores 1,000th Point as Men's Basketball Holds On

RICHMOND, Va.Derek Simpson scored his 1,000th career point and the Saint Joseph's men's basketball team held on for a 67-65 win against the Richmond Spiders on Sunday afternoon.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Simpson netted 19 in the game, including a personal best five three-pointers. He also pulled in a career-high 13 rebounds for his second career double-double.
  • He becomes the first SJU player with back-to-back double-doubles since Rasheer Fleming did it on January 3 and 8, 2025.
  • Austin Williford was in double figures for the second consecutive game, scoring 12.
  • Dasear Haskins tallied 11, seven in the second half.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Hawks got off to a hot start, connecting on nine of their first 16 shots overall and 5-for-10 from three-point range as SJU built a 23-14 lead at the 13:14 mark. Simpson was a big part of it, connecting on all three of his treys in the opening six-plus minutes.
  • Richmond began to find its stroke and cut the lead to three with 7:10 remaining in the first half, but St. Joe's came back with ferocity as a 7-0 run followed in just 58 seconds. Anthony Finkley got the spurt started with a triple before Haskins had a steal and score. Following a miss by the Spiders, Simpson drove for a layup, extending the SJU lead to 35-25.
  • Trading baskets for the final five minutes, the last score of the stanza was delivered by Simpson with his fourth three-pointer of the frame as Saint Joseph's took a 45-33 lead into halftime.
  • Opening the second 20 minutes, SJU turned up the defense, forcing UR to miss its first six shots of the half as the Hawks built a 50-33 advantage. The defense was important as St. Joe's went cold from the floor, allowing Richmond to pull the game back to single digits at 52-45 with 12:21 to go.
  • The game went down to the wire with the Hawks leading by one and Finkley at the line. He made 1-of-2 at the line and SJU survived a contested three-point attempt by the Spiders.
