ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The Saint Joseph's women's basketball team was unable to overcome an early deficit on the road Wednesday evening, dropping a 57-48 decision to St. Bonaventure at the Reilly Center.
FIRST QUARTER
- St. Bonaventure (12-6, 3-3 A-10) opened the game on a 7-0 run before Cecilia Kay scored Saint Joseph's (12-5, 3-3 A-10) first points at the free-throw line.
- Kay sparked a 6-0 run to pull the Hawks within one, but an 8-2 surge by the Bonnies closed the quarter with the hosts holding a seven-point edge.
SECOND QUARTER
- The Bonnies pushed the lead to 22-10 in the opening minute after five quick points, forcing head coach Cindy Griffin to call an early timeout.
- Gabby Casey snapped a near seven-minute scoring drought for the Hawks, scoring or assisting on nine consecutive points to trim the deficit to 26-19 with more than three minutes remaining.
- Rhian Stokes capped an 11-point Hawk surge with a steal and finish at the other end, while Casey converted two of three free throws with 0.9 seconds left to send Saint Joseph's into halftime trailing by four after scoring 15 of the final 18 points of the quarter.
THIRD QUARTER
- The teams exchanged 8-0 runs to begin the second half, with Stokes scoring six of Saint Joseph's eight points as the Hawks stayed within four.
- Aleah Snead's layup with 4:26 remaining was Saint Joseph's final basket of the period as the Bonnies held the Hawks scoreless the rest of the way, extending the lead to 43-35 entering the fourth.
FOURTH QUARTER
- Stokes scored on back-to-back possessions to pull the Hawks within 46-43.
- Saint Joseph's managed just one field goal over the next five minutes as St. Bonaventure built a 10-point advantage with 1:30 remaining.
- A Stokes 3-pointer with 1:12 left cut the deficit to seven, but consecutive empty possessions allowed the Bonnies to close out the 57-48 victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Rhian Stokes led all scorers with 20 points, and added five rebounds and three steals.
- Gabby Casey posted 15 points, eight rebounds, three steals and two assists, and accounted for 13 of Saint Joseph's 15 points in the second quarter through scoring or assists.
- Aleah Snead added six points, seven rebounds and three steals.
- Saint Joseph's shot 14-for-56 (25.0%) from the field and 4-for-30 (13.3%) from 3-point range. St. Bonaventure finished 23-for-48 (47.9%) overall and 4-for-10 (40.0%) from deep.
