PHILADELPHIA – Three players scored in double figures as the Saint Joseph's men's basketball team came away with a signature win, downing the Dayton Flyers, 81-74, on Saturday afternoon.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Dasear Haskins, Jaiden Glover-Toscano and Derek Simpson all scored 20 in the game.
- For Haskins, it was a career-high.
- Simpson led SJU with nine assists.
- Austin Williford came away with four steals.
- Justice Ajogbor had four blocks in the game. He now has 227 in his career and is currently the active leader in blocked shots in Division I.
- The Hawks turned the ball over just 12 times against a Dayton team that entered play sixth nationally, forcing 16.6 opponent miscues per outing.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Flyers jumped out to an 11-3 lead at the first media timeout, connecting on a trio of three-pointers.
- UD maintained a six-to-eight-point advantage throughout the first half before a 12-3 run by SJU put the Hawks on top, 27-25, courtesy of a Simpson trey with 4:25 to go in the half.
- Dayton reclaimed the lead with a pair of free throws, but St. Joe's scored eight in a row, going up 35-29 with 2:13 remaining.
- The next run belonged to the Flyers, who scored seven in a row to take a 36-35 lead. With time winding down in the half, Saint Joseph's missed a pair of triples, but Ajogbor came away with offensive rebounds on both shots. Off the second one, Simpson found Haskins in the left corner where he buried a three-pointer, as time expired to send SJU into the locker room up 38-36.
- Opening the second half, Dayton knotted the score at 40-40. From there, the Hawks began to take control of the game, netting nine consecutive points, five by Glover-Toscano and four by Haskins. After a pair of UD buckets pulled the edge to four, SJU rallied with a 20-8 run, opening a 69-53 advantage with 6:28 left in the contest.
- St. Joe's would keep a double-digit edge through most of the remainder, until Dayton made one last push at the end, slicing the edge to 80-74. The Hawks were able to seal the contest, making 8-of-10 at the free throw line in the final 93 seconds.
