CHICAGO – Six players scored in double figures as the Saint Joseph's men's basketball team won for the fifth time in its last six games with an 85-64 win at Loyola Chicago on Tuesday night.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Austin Williford had his first career double-double with career-highs of 17 points and 10 rebounds.
- Derek Simpson posted a double-double of his own with 15 points and 10 assists, adding a career-high five steals.
- Jaiden Glover-Toscano netted 16.
- Justice Ajogbor scored 10, grabbed seven rebounds and had five blocks. He now has 14 career rejections in three games against Loyola Chicago.
- Dasear Haskins netted 12. Anthony Finkley posted 10 points.
- The Hawks shot 56.3 percent for the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- St. Joe's got off to a good start from the floor, hitting its first three shots and eight of its first 13, getting out to a 18-7 lead less than five minutes into the game. Defense also played a part as the Hawks forced four turnovers in the span and scored off all of them.
- SJU eventually ballooned the lead to 25-8 before Loyola, made some noise, scoring six in a row. The Hawks responded immediately, using a 10-3 run of their own, including three-pointers from Williford and Glover-Toscano, taking a 35-17 lead with 5:22 remaining in the half.
- The onslaught continued through the final buzzer of the frame with Saint Joseph's shooting 66.7 percent for the half, taking a 51-24 lead into halftime.
- Opening the second half, St. Joe's scored the first six points, four of them coming on a couple of thunderous dunks from Ajogbor.
- Loyola Chicago began to find its stroke midway through the second half and used a 12-0 run to cut the lead to 75-58 with a pair of free throws just after the final media timeout. The Hawks regained their footing, scoring seven of the next 10 points.
