PHILADELPHIA – The Saint Joseph's men's basketball team won for the sixth time in the last seven games, grinding out a 67-58 win against La Salle on Saturday afternoon.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Dasear Haskins tied career highs with 20 points and 11 rebounds for his second double-double of the year.
- Jaiden Glover-Toscano netted 16.
- Derek Simpson had 13 points, six rebounds and seven assists.
- Khaafiq Myers and Jaden Smith provided quality minutes off the bench, combining for 13 points, three rebounds and three steals.
- SJU tied a season-high with 14 three-pointers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- La Salle got off to a hot start, hitting four of its first five shots from the floor. The Hawks responded from distance, scoring their first 12 points on threes and used an 8-0 run to go up 14-9 five minutes into the game. SJU extended the spurt to 14-0 thanks to a pair more of threes from Haskins, who scored 11 points in the first six-plus minutes.
- St. Joe's built a 20-9 lead, but the Explorers made their run, scoring 11 of the next 13 points, cutting the gap to 22-20 midway through the opening half.
- The game remained close through the two-minute mark when Saint Joseph's scored the final five points of the half and took a 36-29 lead into the locker room.
- After trading baskets for the first couple of moments in the second half, SJU went on an extended 18-8 run to open its largest lead of the game at 63-47 with 4:06 remaining.
- As expected in a city rivalry game, La Salle came back, scoring 11 in a row to chop the edge to 63-58. The Hawks sealed the game, calmly depositing all four of their free throws in the final 36 seconds.
