Men's Basketball Shows Resolve with Gritty Overtime Win

PHILADELPHIA – In a gut-check game, the Saint Joseph's men's basketball team forced overtime with less than seven seconds remaining and then reeled off a 12-0 run in the extra session as the Hawks downed the Duquesne Dukes, 97-90 on Wednesday night.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Jaiden Glover-Toscano led all scorers with 28 points, connecting on five three-pointers.
  • Derek Simpson and Dasear Haskins each had their first career double-doubles.
  • Simpson tied a personal best, scoring 23 points. He dished a career-high 11 assists and tied his best mark with four steals. He also went 9-for-9 from the free throw line.
  • Haskins scored 13 with a career-high 10 rebounds. Nine of his points came after halftime.
  • Austin Williford tallied a personal best 16 points with 13 of them coming in the second half and overtime, including a layup to beat the shot clock that put SJU ahead to stay.
  • Justice Ajogbor blocked two shots. The first one tied him for 10th on the Saint Joseph's career list with 116, matching Ronald Roberts, Jr. (2010-14).
  • The game featured 17 ties and 15 lead changes. Outside of one play at the end of the first half, neither team held more than a six-point lead until overtime.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both the Hawks and Dukes traded baskets for the majority of the first half. Duquesne tied the score at 30-30 on a pair of free throws with 3:35 to go in the first half. From that point, the Hawks went on a 10-2 run, opening up a 40-32 lead before holding a six-point edge at halftime.
  • The Dukes pulled even in a matter of two minutes, tying the game at 41-41. Each time DU knotted the score in the next three minutes, St. Joe's would answer back, not letting Duquesne have the lead until a layup at 14:56 put the Dukes up 49-47.
  • For the next several moments, it looked like Duquesne would pull away, but SJU never let the opposition get too far ahead. Trailing 60-54 with the game approaching the midway point of the second half, the Hawks methodically clawed their way back, tying the game on a Simpson free throw and eventually going up 74-69 on a four-point play from Glover-Toscano with six minutes to go.
  • Duquesne made its next push, going up 83-80 with 37 seconds remaining in regulation. Glover Toscano hit a shot at the free throw line to make it a two-point game. Saint Joseph's fouled with 22 seconds on the clock. The Dukes' player missed the front end of a one-and-one with Simpson grabbing the rebound and running into the frontcourt to call timeout.
  • On the inbound, the ball came to Simpson who passed to Glover-Toscano coming off a screen on the left wing. Passing up a three, the sophomore drove towards the lane, but had his path cut off at the elbow. Without an outlet to pass to, he hit an off-balance fadeaway with 6.3 seconds left, tying the score and forcing another five minutes of play.
  • Duquesne scored the first basket of the extra session, a three-pointer 92 seconds into the period. It took the Hawks until the 2:48 mark to get their first points of the extra session, but when they did, they took the game and ran with it. Williford hit a trey, tying the game at 86-86.
  • After an offensive foul gave St. Joe's the ball back, Simpson had a layup blocked out of bounds with one second left on the shot clock. Once again, Williford came up big, cutting along the baseline while taking the inbound pass to just beat the buzzer, giving SJU the lead.
  • Those plays ignited a 12-0 run for Saint Joseph's. Simpson sealed the win with four free throws in the final 13 seconds.
