PRINCETON, N.J. – The Saint Joseph's field hockey team played a strong second half, but ultimately fell short in a 2-1 defeat at eighth-ranked Princeton on Sunday afternoon.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Princeton (11-4) controlled much of the first half, holding an 8-1 advantage in shots. The Tigers made that advantage pay off with goals on penalty corners in each quarter; Tabby Vaughn scored midway through the first before Saylor Milone doubled the lead early in the second.
Â
• Saint Joseph's (8-9) found its footing in the third quarter and cut the deficit in half four minutes in. After a referral awarded the Hawks a penalty corner,
Alison Buffington inserted to set up a shot for
Adèle Jardemar; Jardemar's attempt was blocked by a defender, but Buffington was there to fire the rebound home and get the Hawks on the board.
Â
• The Hawks would have opportunities late, but ultimately couldn't find the cage a second time.
Â
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• The Tigers finished the day with a 10-4 lead in shots, and earned seven corners to one for the Hawks.
Â
•
Avianna Wagner made three saves in the cage for the Hawks, while Olivia Caponiti had one for the Tigers.
Â
• Sunday's game was the Hawks' seventh against a ranked team this season; five of those teams – UConn, Maryland, Duke, North Carolina, and Princeton – are currently ranked in the top nine of the most recent NFHCA Coaches Poll.
