DURHAM, N.C. – The Saint Joseph's field hockey team put in arguably its strongest performance of the season on Sunday, but ultimately fell to the nation's third-ranked team as Duke claimed a 2-1 overtime victory at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (5-6) started Sunday's game with an early goal, just as it had on Friday. This time, it was Adèle Jardemar on a penalty corner insert from
Lily DeWan and a stop by
Monica Piccioli two and a half minutes into the contest that gave the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
Â
• The hosts ratcheted up the pressure for the remainder of the half, culminating in a penalty stroke opportunity for Alaina McVeigh, but
Avianna Wagner stood tall in the cage, stopping the stroke attempt and then following with a pair of saves on a corner in the final two minutes to keep the Hawks on top at the break.
Â
• The Blue Devils ripped off eight shots in the third to no avail, while the Hawks had three corner opportunities late in the quarter but could not cash in.
Â
• Duke (9-2) broke through with less than five minutes to play as Callie Rogers converted on the Blue Devils' ninth corner of the day to send the game to overtime.
Â
• In the extra frame, McVeigh found the back of the cage to give the Blue Devils the win.
Â
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Wagner made eight saves on the day to keep the Hawks in the game, while Kaiya Chepow made one for hosts.
Â
• Duke held a 23-4 advantage in shots on the day with a 9-4 edge in corners.
