Men's Basketball Shows Grit in Win at Rhode Island

KINGSTON R.I. – The Saint Joseph's men's basketball team won its fourth consecutive game, topping the Rhode Island Rams, 61-55 on Saturday afternoon. St. Joe's is now 19-10 overall and 11-5 in the Atlantic 10.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Dasear Haskins led the Hawks with 14 points.
  • Derek Simpson scored 13, dished five assists and had three steals.
  • Khaafiq Myers filled the stat sheet with nine points, a team-leading eight rebounds, three assists, two steals and his first career block.
  • Justice Ajogbor netted nine with six boards and three blocks. He became the seventh player in SJU history with at least 150 blocks.
  • Saint Joseph's is now 5-2 in its last seven road games.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It was a slow start for the Hawks, who found themselves down 7-0 before a pair of Simpson free throws got them on the board.
  • Defense kept St. Joe's in the game as the offense worked its way back into the contest with SJU going on a 14-2 run to open a 16-11 lead with 8:48 to go in the first half, forcing a Rhode Island timeout.
  • The game remained close throughout the remainder of the half. Off the bench, Myers provided a spark with four points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals as the Hawks went into the locker room up 30-27.
  • Coming out of halftime with an extra jump in its step, Saint Joseph's began the second stanza on a 14-4 run. Seven of the points to start the frame came on the fastbreak as SJU took a 44-31 lead with 13:53 remaining. Unfortunately, the Hawks began to go cold from the floor, allowing URI to methodically work its way back into the contest.
  • Rhode Island pulled to 56-55 on a pair of free throws with 3:54 remaining. Those were the last points the Hawks allowed the Rams, however. On the ensuing trip down the floor, Glover-Toscano connected on a clutch three. The defense for SJU forced a stop to give St. Joe's the ball back. Simpson found Ajogbor in the dunker position. The graduate student center did just that, flushing the ball with two hands, giving Saint Joseph's a 61-55 lead.
