PITTSBURGH – The Saint Joseph's men's basketball team broke open a tight game early in the second half as the Hawks downed Davidson, 70-58, in the Atlantic 10 Championship quarterfinals on Friday night.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Jaiden Glover-Toscano led St. Joe's with 19 points, going 3-for-5 from beyond the arc. He also pulled in five rebounds and had three steals.
- Justice Ajogbor scored 18. He now has double figures in three of his four career games against Davidson and is averaging 11.8 PPG against the Wildcats.
- Derek Simpson netted 16 with five rebounds and six assists.
- Austin Williford led the Hawks with 10 rebounds.
- SJU went 22-for-26 at the free throw line.
- Saint Joseph's is now 5-0 in the A-10 Tournament on March 13.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Neither team got off to a good start from the field, but the Hawks were able to take the lead at the foul line, making six free throws in the opening eight minutes as St. Joe's held a 13-9 lead with 11:37 to go in the first half.
- After being held scoreless for more than four minutes, Davidson went on an 8-0 run and took a 17-16 lead before a thunderous one-handed dunk from Simpson ended the spurt.
- As the half wound down, SJU continued to lead with its work at the charity stripe, going 15-for-17 in the frame. The Wildcats countered by grabbing eight offensive rebounds, helping them to 11 more shots from the floor. With all the factors accounted for, Saint Joseph's took a 33-29 lead into the locker room.
- DC scored five of the first seven points out of the break, cutting it to 35-34. From there, the Hawks went on a 12-2 run, capped by an Ajogbor layup that gave SJU a 47-36 lead at the 12:02 mark.
- Another SJU 12-2 run later in the stanza extended the lead to 61-42 with 6:45 to play. Davidson closed the contest on a 7-0 spurt to create the final score.
