Ninth-Inning Rally Leads Baseball Past Richmond, 4-3

RICHMOND, Va. – With the Hawks down a run and the bases loaded with two outs in the top of the ninth, Richard Beggy came through with a two-run single for the second day in a row to lead the Saint Joseph's baseball team past Richmond, 4-3, at Pitt Field on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The scoring came early and late and nowhere in between in this one.  Saint Joseph's (7-9 overall, 2-0 Atlantic 10) got on the board in the first inning for the second day in a row after Ben Peterson reached on an error and scored on a double by Alex Kelsey.  Blake Primrose followed with a single to put the Hawks on top, 2-0, before an out was recorded.

• Richmond (10-9 overall, 0-2 Atlantic 10) cut the deficit in half right away as Evan Wilson led off with a solo home run.

• The game stayed at 2-1 until the eighth, but not for a lack of trying as both teams had plenty of base runners throughout the day.  The Spiders loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the fifth before Sam Greer came out of the bullpen to fan Ryan Recio; the Hawks would then load the bases themselves in the top of the seventh, but Justin Gay came on to end the threat for the hosts.

• The Spiders finally broke through with two out in the bottom of the eighth.  With runners at second and third, pinch hitter Sean Scanlon hit an 0-2 pitch to right center to clear the bases and give Richmond a 3-2 lead.

• Carson Applegate led off the ninth with a walk before Peterson doubled to put two on with nobody out.  After an intentional walk to Kelsey loaded the bases, Gay fanned the next two hitters to bring up Beggy, who punched a single to left to score two and restore the lead.

• The 27th out is always the toughest, and that would prove true for the Hawks as well; the Spiders would mount a two-out rally, putting two on base, but Andrew Gaines struck out Recio to end the ballgame and seal the win.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Gaines notched the win after allowing two hits and striking two in recording the final five outs.  Gay took the loss, allowing two runs on two hits in two and a third innings.

• Cole Fehrman got the start for the Hawks and allowed a run on four hits while striking out 10 in four and two-thirds innings; Jackson Hinchliffe tossed the same shift for Richmond and allowed a pair of unearned runs on five hits.

• Tim Dickinson was the only Hawk to enjoy a multi-hit game, while Peterson scored twice and Beggy collected the pivotal two runs batted in.
