MERION STATION, Pa. – The Saint Joseph's baseball team improved to 6-0 in conference play for the first time in program history as the Hawks topped George Washington, 7-5, at Smithson Field on Sunday.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (11-10 overall, 6-0 Atlantic 10) jumped out to yet another early lead with runs in the first.Â
Joey Gale and
Alex Kelsey walked to bring up
Blake Primrose, who went deep to left center for an early 3-0 lead for the Hawks.
Â
• After a pitching change,
Joey Pagano walked and stole second before scoring on a single by
Jason Janesko, who would eventually score on a throwing error to put the Hawks on top, 5-0, after one.
Â
• George Washington (8-13 overall, 2-4 Atlantic 10) got one back in the second, but Kelsey got it right back after he beat out an infield single, matriculated his way around the bases on a passed ball and a wild pitch, and came in to score on a single by
Richard Beggy. Beggy then scored on a sacrifice fly by Janesko.
Â
• The Revolutionaries answered with a run in the third and one in the fourth to make it a 7-3 game.
Â
• That's where it would remain until the ninth. GW would load the bases with one out before a fielder's choice plated a run and a pair of walks scored another and reloaded the bases.Â
Matt Speicher was able to induce a ground ball, however, to end the threat and finish off the win.
Â
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
•
Luke Parise had another good start on the mound for the Hawks, tossing six innings and allowing three runs, two of them earned, on five hits while striking out four to earn the win. Liam Thyen started for GW and took the loss, as he faced just three batters and gave up three runs without recording an out. Speicher got the final two outs for the save.
Â
• Janesko continued his strong weekend with another multi-hit, multi-RBI game as he was 2-ofr-3 with a run scored and two more driven in.
Â
• The 6-0 start to conference play is now the best conference start in program history.
