Ferhman Nearly Unhittable as Baseball Blanks Fordham, 3-0

BRONX, N.Y. – Cole Fehrman carried a no-hitter into the ninth inning on Saturday as the Saint Joseph's baseball team shut out Fordham, 3-0, at Houlihan Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (15-10 overall, 8-0 Atlantic 10) had runners on base in each of the first four innings, including putting runners on second and third with two outs in the fourth, but couldn't push anything across.

• Fehrman, meanwhile, issued two walks and hit a batter early, but settled in to retire 16 consecutive batters between the third and eighth innings.

• The Hawks finally broke through in the top of the seventh.  Jason Janesko led off the inning and was hit by a pitch; three batters later, he scored on a two-out single by Carson Applegate to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.

• Joey Pagano provided some breathing room in the eighth; after a single by Blake Primrose and a double by Richard Beggy, Pagano ripped one back up the middle to score both runners and extend the lead to 3-0.

• Fordham (11-14 overall, 4-4 Atlantic 10) made its last stand in the bottom of the ninth.  After a walk to start the inning, Fehrman struck out Tommy McAndrews but then ceded a single to Anthony Grabau to end the no-hit bid.  Andrew Gaines came on from the bullpen and, after issuing a walk to load the bases, fanned the final two batters of the game to seal the win.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Fehrman allowed just the one hit over eight and a third innings, striking out 11 and walking three to earn his first win in a Hawk uniform.  Gaines recorded the final two outs for his fourth save.

• Chase Hanawalt pitched well in defeat for the Rams, falling to 1-4 after allowing three runs on six hits in seven and a third innings.

• Beggy and Joey Gale had two hits apiece for the Hawks, while Pagano and Janesko also reached base twice in the game.

• Saturday's game is the first conference game of the season in which Saint Joseph's did not score in the first inning.
