Bats Batter Bison as Baseball Beats Bucknell, 13-3

MERION STATION, Pa. – Offensive outbursts both early and late paired with strong pitching led the Saint Joseph's baseball team to a 13-3 win over Bucknell at Smithson Field on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (5-8) got things started right away in the bottom of the first.  Two batters into the game, Alex Kelsey was hit by a pitch and then came in to score on a double by Blake Primrose.  Jason Janesko later singled in Primrose to make it 2-0.

• The Hawks tacked on five more in the third.  Kelsey beat out an infield single before back-to-back triple from Joey Pagano and Richard Beggy doubled the lead to 4-0.  Janesko then singled Beggy home before a walk to Alex Venezia and a single by Tim Dickinson pushed the lead to 6-0.  After a fielder's choice by Ben Peterson, Venezia and Peterson executed a double steal to plater another run.

• A solo home run to right by Primrose in the fourth pushed the lead to 8-0 before a two-out walk to Dickinson and an RBI double by Peterson in the sixth made it a 9-0 game.

• All the while, Luke Parise was dominant on the mound for the Hawks.  The Bison did not have a runner on base until a fifth-inning walk, and it wasn't until there were two outs in the seventh before the visitors notched a hit.

• Bucknell (4-9) would turn that hit into runs, however, as a ground-rule double by Ty Lagoni broke up the no-hit bid before a pair of walks and a single by Lleyton Coupe drove in a pair.

• The Hawks upped the lead with four more in the eighth.  Janesko was hit by a pitch to start the frame before Venezia hit a home run to left to make it 11-2 in favor of the hosts.  A walk and two singles then loaded the bases before Ryan Price came in to score on a wild pitch.  Beggy then followed with a single to left to score Carson Applegate and push the advantage to 13-2.

• The Bison picked up one more consolation run in the top of the ninth on a two-out single by Zach Selfon to set the final margin.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Parise tossed seven strong innings, allowing just the two runs on two hits while striking out seven to improve to 1-1.  Brady Hoar took the loss, falling to 1-2 after allowing seven runs on seven hits in three innings.

• Janesko was 4-for-5 on the day with two runs scored and two more driven in while Primrose added three hits and a walk to go with two runs and two RBI of his own.  Janesko was also hit by a pitch to reach base five times on Sunday.

• Kelsey and Venezia each scored twice while Beggy and Venezia collected two RBI apiece.

• Beggy finished the series with eight hits, two runs scored, and seven driven in across three games.  He has hit safely in all but one of his 10 appearances this season.

• Every Hawk in the starting lineup recorded at least one hit in the game.
