DAYTON, Ohio –
Joey Pagano doubled in the winning run and scored an insurance run himself in the top of the 10th inning as the Saint Joseph's baseball team topped Dayton, 5-3, in extra innings at Woerner Field at AES Ohio Stadium on Friday afternoon.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Dayton (18-14 overall, 5-8 Atlantic 10) took the lead in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Michael Smith.
Â
• Saint Joseph's (21-11 overall, 12-1 Atlantic 10) answered in the top of the fourth.Â
Alex Kelsey led off the frame with a walk and advanced to third on a one-out single by
Richard Beggy. Pagano followed with a double to score Kelsey and leave runners on second and third. After Beggy was thrown out at home on a fielder's choice, a
Tim Dickinson single scored Pagano and gave the Hawks a 2-1 lead.
Â
• The Flyers threatened in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases with one out, but
Christian Coppola struck out the last two batters of the inning to escape the jam.
Â
• The hosts drew level in the seventh on a two-out single by Colin Lynch.
Â
• The Hawks went ahead in the top of the ninth on a sacrifice fly by
Alex Venezia that scored Pagano, but Smith added another RBI single with one out in the bottom of the inning to send the game to extra innings at 3-3.
Â
• Pagano was involved once again in the 10th, this time at the plate. After a one-out walk to
Blake Primrose, Pagano ripped a double off the center field wall that scored Primrose to put the Hawks back on top; Pagano then advanced to third as the throw home hit the pitching rubber. That proved key as a passed ball then plated Pagano to extend the lead to 5-3.
Â
•
Matt Speicher then came in from the bullpen and sent the Flyers down in order to finish off the win for the Hawks.
Â
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Speicher recorded his second save of the season to preserve the win for
Jackson Campbell, who allowed one run on one hit while striking out four in two innings of relief. Austin McNabb took the loss for Dayton, allowing a run on a hit and a walk in an inning and two-thirds.
Â
• Pagano went 2-for-4 with two doubles and was responsible for all five Hawk runs on the day, scoring three of them and driving in the other two. Dickinson added two hits as well.
