Baseball Hangs On for 5-4 Win at Dayton

DAYTON, Ohio – The Saint Joseph's baseball team kept up its winning ways on Saturday as the Hawks defeated Dayton, 5-4, at Woerner Field at AES Ohio Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (22-11 overall, 13-1 Atlantic 10) took the lead in the top of the first as Alex Kelsey singled and came in to score on a double by Blake Primrose.

• Dayton (18-15 overall, 5-9 Atlantic 10) leveled the score in the bottom of the second on a single by Grayson Carpenter and then took the lead on a Dyrenson Wouters double in the third, both coming with two outs.

• The Hawks equalized in the fifth as Kelsey ripped a two-out triple before Primrose scorched a ground ball off the third baseman's glove for an RBI infield single.

• SJU took the lead back in the sixth.  Joey Pagano and Jason Janesko were both hit by a pitch to start the inning and made their way to second and third with two outs; Carson Applegate then singled them both home for a 4-2 lead.

• Primrose added some key insurance with a solo home run in the top of the seventh.

• The Flyers got an RBI double from Colin Lynch in the bottom of the seventh, leaving second and third with nobody out, but Matt Fitzgibbon navigated the trouble on the mound to prevent further damage.

• Lynch doubled in another run in the ninth to cut the margin to one, but a pair of infield popups ended the game with the tying run in scoring position.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Cole Ferhman allowed two runs on six hits while striking out seven in five and two-thirds to earn the win, while Andrew Gaines allowed a run on two hits in the ninth to record his seventh save.  Jon Whiteside allowed four runs on seven hits in six innings to take the loss.

• Primrose led the Hawks with three hits and three runs batted in; his homer in the seventh was his fifth in the last six games.

• Kelsey and Applegate recorded two hits apiece as well, with Kelsey scoring twice and Applegate recording two RBI.
