DAYTON, Ohio – The Saint Joseph's baseball team ran its winning streak to eight games on Sunday with an 18-5 rout of Dayton at Woerner Field at AES Ohio Stadium.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
• As they've done so many times before, the Hawks started off strong in the top of the first inning.Â
Joey Gale led off with a single before walks to
Alex Kelsey and
Blake Primrose loaded the bases for
Richard Beggy, who laced a single to left center to score two and give the Hawks the lead before an out was recorded.
Â
• Two batters later,
Tim Dickinson laid down a squeeze bunt that allowed Primrose to score and make it a 3-0 game. Primrose then led off the top of the third with a double before Beggy followed with a two-run home run to left to extend the lead to 5-0.
Â
• Dayton (18-16 overall, 5-10 Atlantic 10) got one back on a solo home run by Michael Smith, Jr., in the bottom of the third, but Primrose answered in the top of the fourth.Â
Carson Applegate was hit by a pitch to start the inning before Kelsey singled two batters later. Primrose then came to the plate and hit a no-doubt-about-it moonshot to left center to stretch the Hawk advantage to 8-1.
Â
• Ryan MacDougall hit an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth to cut the Hawk lead to 8-2.
Â
• Saint Joseph's (23-11 overall, 14-1 Atlantic 10) began pulling away in the seventh. Walks to Beggy and
Joey Pagano and a single by Dickinson loaded the bases for
Alex Venezia, who brought home a run with an RBI groundout. Two batters later, Applegate ripped a double to left to score two and push the edge to 11-2; Kelsey would then single Applegate home to make it a 12-2 game.
Â
• The Flyers scored three in the bottom of the frame on a sacrifice fly by Colin Lynch and a two-run home run by MacDougall to stave off a run-rule defeat, but the Hawks tacked on two more in the eighth. Beggy led off with a walk before Pagano hit an RBI double to bring him home; two batters later, a Venezia sacrifice fly scored Pagano to make it 14-5.
Â
• Primrose capped off the afternoon in grand fashion in the top of the ninth. Applegate doubled, Gale was hit by a pitch, and Kelsey singled to load the bases for Primrose, who promptly unloaded them by unloading on an opposite field grand slam to set the final margin.
Â
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
•
Luke Parise allowed two runs across six innings while striking out nine to earn the win and improve to 4-1 on the season;
Justin Sweeney added two and a third shutout innings of hitless ball as well for the Hawks. John Delgado was tagged for eight runs on six hits and four walks in three and a third to take the loss for Dayton.
Â
• Primrose finished the game 3-for-5 with a walk, four runs scored, seven driven in, and two home runs. Beggy drove in four runs and scored three while finishing 3-for-4 with two walks and a home run as well.
Â
• Kelsey and Applegate scored three runs apiece, with Kelsey adding three hits as well. Applegate and Venezia each collected two RBI for the day.
Â
• The Hawks scored in the first inning for the 12th time in 15 conference games. Saint Joseph's has now won eight in a row, 15 out of 16, and 18 of the last 20 games overall.
