PHILADELPHIA – Saint Joseph's men's soccer collected three weekly honors Monday, highlighted by Alex Smith earning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honors. Smith was also named Philadelphia Soccer Six Goalkeeper and Rookie of the Week, while Diego Avelar earned PS6 Defensive Player of the Week honors.
 
Avelar anchored a Saint Joseph's defense that posted back-to-back clean sheets against Rider and LIU. The sophomore has played every minute of the season at center back and capped the week with the first goal of his collegiate career, scoring the game-winner in Saturday's 2-0 victory over LIU.
 
Smith recorded 10 saves across the two matches while not allowing a goal. The rookie made a season-high six saves in a scoreless draw at Rider before adding four saves in the shutout victory over LIU.
 
Through five games, Smith has allowed just two goals, the second-fewest goals allowed through five games in program history, trailing only the 1971 team. He enters the week with a .920 save percentage.
 
The weekly honors mark the latest recognition for a Saint Joseph's squad that has allowed just two goals through its first five matches of the season, the second-fewest in program history through five games.
