POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (05/04/03) -- MAAC Tournament MVP David Lambour made 13 saves and Matt Warner tallied five goals in leading Mount St. Mary's to a 8-2 win over Saint Joseph's in the 2003 MAAC Championship. SJU freshman goalkeeper Travis McDonnell made 21 saves in net to keep the game close. Seniors Alex Heidenberger and Chris Spay were named to the all-tournament team for the Hawks. The Mount jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first quarter, with two goals from Matt Warner and one goal apiece from Billy Jautze and Ian Cassidy. Warner increased the Mountaineers' lead with back-to-back goals in the second quarter, and Josh Warfield put his squad ahead, 7-0, going into the halftime after netting a shot with 47 seconds remaining in the stanza. Saint Joseph's scored its first goal of the game at the 3:04 mark of the third quarter when freshman Keegan Wilkinson found junior Brian Mullan to cut the score to 7-1. A sophomore Kevin McGrann goal made it 7-2 at the 3:37 mark of the fourth, but MSM added an insurance goal to capture the league title. The Mount earns the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Joining Spay and Heidenberger on the All-Tournament Team were Mountaineers Harry Mendez, Matt Prior, Ian Cassidy, Warfield and Warner. Also on the squad were Brian O'Rorke from Providence, and Mark Miyashita from Canisius. SJU finishes its season 6-9 overall, while the Mountaineers improve to 10-7.
