POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (05/03/02) - Saint Joseph's jumped ahead early on top-seed Manhattan in the MAAC Tournament semifinals, 3-1, but the Jasper defense held SJU scoreless for nearly three quarters to win the game, 11-6, and end SJU's season.

Ed Walsh tallied the Hawks three first quarter goals following a goal by MC's Brady Becklo, to put the Hawks ahead 3-1. The Jaspers, which were undefeated in regular season MAAC play, called timeout, and then put the clamps on the Hawk offense.
Manhattan scored three goals to end that first quarter with a 4-3 advantage. That was just the start as the top-seed ran off 10 straight tallies in all. The Hawks scored the final three goals, all in the fourth quarter, cutting the final margin to five.
Walsh, named second team all-MAAC the night before along with junior
Chris Spay, led the Hawks with two goals and one assist.
Senior
Nick Leopard stopped 18 shots in goal for SJU.
Eugene Tanner led a balanced Manhattan attack with three goals while Jamie Amandola had 16 saves.
The Hawks finish the 2002 season with a 4-10 mark. Manhattan advances with a 10-5 record.
