HAWK WOMEN GAIN REVENGE OVER FORDHAM, 58-43

BRONX, NY (2/22/03) - The Saint Joseph's women's basketball team (15-9, 11-3 A-10) shot just 39.5% from the floor, but held Fordham (14-13, 5-9 A-10) to an even more paltry 22.4% shooting, and avenged last Sunday's loss in Philadelphia with a 58-43 win at the Rose Hill Gymnasium. Junior Stephanie Graff recorded a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds and fellow junior Irina Krasnoshiok added 17 points and eight caroms for the Crimson and Gray. SJU totally bottled up Fordham's Mobolaji Akiode, the Atlantic 10's top scorer. She burned the Hawks for 26 points last week, but shot 1-21 from the field and was held to seven points. As a team FU was 13-58 shooting for the game (22.4%) and a miserable 2-28 (14.3%) in the second half. St. Joe's led by just four, 44-40, with 3:29 to play in regulation. Elizabeth "Hootie" Mohan then canned a three-pointer from the right side with 2:12 left to make it a seven point margin and ignite a 14-0 Hawk run that broke the game open. SJU shot 9-10 from the free throw line during the spurt, including a perfect 6-6 by Takeya Trayer in the final minute. SJU sprinted out of the gate, bolting to a 12-2 lead less than six minutes into the game. Fordham, however, countered the Hawks' hot start with a 14-1 run that put the Rams up by three-points, 16-13. The lead bounced back-and-forth over the final seven minutes of the opening stanza and FU led at intermission, 24-23. The 43 Ram points were a season low for SJU defensively. The Hawks were 22-26 from the free throw line, while Fordham made 12 of 15 from the line. Krasnoshiok and Graff were steady throughout for SJU. Junior Erin Brady added eight points for the Hawks. Senior Patty Williams was the only Ram to reach double-figures with 10 points. The Hawks will wrap up the regular season next week, traveling to Rhode Island on Thursday and hosting St. Bonaventure on Sunday to close out the year.
